Wichita Mountains
Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge preserves approximately 60,000 acres of mixed grass prairie, ancient granite mountains, and fresh water lakes and streams.
Established in 1901, it is the oldest managed wildlife facility in the United States Fish and Wildlife Service system1. Spanning over 59,000 acres near Lawton, the refuge is a haven for a diverse array of wildlife and offers a plethora of recreational activities2.
A Haven for Wildlife
Herds of American bison, Texas longhorn cattle, and Rocky Mountain elk roam freely across the mixed-grass prairie. Home for prairie dogs, deer, Rocky Mountain elk and other critters, although we didn’t see much except for some longhorns and birds2.
The eastern collared lizard, often called the mountain boomer, is the Oklahoma state reptile.
Recreational Paradise
Plenty of room for fishing, bird watching, wildlife photography, hiking, camping, and kayaking. Caleb inherited the mountain goat rock-climbing gene from his father. He spent a lot of time gettinig to the top of every high place he saw3.
There are loads of hiking trails of different lengths and difficulty. Check in at the visitor center and get maps and suggestions based on your abilities and interests.

The Wichita Mountains also hold cultural significance. Sites like the Holy City of the Wichitas, which hosts the longest-running outdoor passion play in the U.S. Also the Parallel Forest, with its eerily uniform cedar trees planted by the Civilian Conservation Corps3.
